Three Tips for Designing Top Sports Websites

Designing a website dedicated to sports is not an easy task as it requires both lots of time and talent. A sports website can have many different features and comes in various formats because there are many different kinds of these sites. They can focus on upcoming events and the latest news, review sports equipment and clothes, keep track of schedules, concentrate on statistics, etc.

The important thing when it comes to designing the website is to determine who the target audience will be, and here are a few things to take into consideration:

·  People looking for information about sports are mainly males (on average one out of three visitors is female). However, for certain sports this ratio is different.

·  Male visitors spend on average almost 70 minutes looking for sports-related information online monthly, and the majority of them falls in the 25-34 age group.

·  Women tend to follow certain sports predominantly more than some other, mainly when it comes to the NFL, professional golf, American football, and auto racing.

You should also have in mind that these trends are prone to changes, as the number of female visitors is reportedly increasing, and more and more professional sports leagues are recognizing the fact that their products can be successfully marketed to the fairer gender, as well.

Having these things in mind when designing your sports website also comes in very handy:

1. Simplify

There is nothing worse than having various distracting popups and widgets jumping off the screen when all you want to do is find some info that you are looking for. You need to decide which information you want on your website pages and what purpose you want them to serve, and then eliminate all the things that have nothing to do with these two goals. Your content needs to be displayed clearly and should be easy to navigate.

2. Flat design

The current trend in website design encompasses a flat approach. This means using the bare minimum of simple elements and colors. The elements are two-dimensional, which helps the website run smoothly and is vital for responsive design as the loading time is quicker.

When it comes to color, contact sports websites are usually black or red (or other similar darker color), while those dedicated to watersports and skiing are blue, green or white (or any other lighter color in general).

3. Font and whitespace

If there is a lot of content, choosing the appropriate font and utilizing whitespace is of extreme importance. The font should preferably be larger and relatively simple (14 px minimum), and ideally, different fonts should be used for headlines and body copies. Whitespace, or the “negative” space around the content, should also be incorporated as it helps the eyes relax.
